The Hot Dog: The American Favorite
Nothing Beats A Classic Hot Dog
Imagine yourself chilling by the river while you bask in the California sunshine. Music dances with the breeze as you take a chug from the ice-cold beer in your hand. It seems like nothing can make your life more perfect, except there is…a sizzling quarter-pound hot dog.
Culturally imported from Germany, hot dogs now play an important role in the American culture and tradition. As popcorn is to movies, it is a baseball game’s soul mate. Here, it became the street food of the working class. Sold at hot dog stand, carts, and trucks, it is one of the easiest choices when in need of a quick bite.
Overtime, hot dogs became an all-American favorite. Aside from the usual wandering carts and trucks, this delicious snack is always readily available and kept heated on rotating grills in convenience stores. No matter how classy or sophisticated a restaurant might strive to be, hot dogs are more often than not present in any kitchen, particularly on the kids’ menu. Drizzled with mustard, topped with ketchup, sprinkled with pickles, onions, and everything in between, there is very little to hate about this food.
Many variations of hotdogs have risen since it was popularized in the United States. The original king is known today as the “New York dog” or “New York style.” This simple all-beef sausage is overflowing with sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard. New York’s closest neighbor, New Jersey, has made its own version that consists of deep-fried Italian hot dogs with sautéed bell peppers, onions, and potatoes. Meanwhile, Chicago has some of the most well-known extraordinary hotdogs. These extremely popular franks are loaded with toppings that typically include fresh tomato, pickles, hot peppers, sweet onions, and bright green relish. In the San Francisco bay area, it is common to find these hot dogs sandwiched between buns with mayonnaise, pickles, shallots, tomatoes, and shredded lettuce.
Here at Swabbies, we have our own version of this savory goodness. Our classic quarter-pound dog is topped with mustard, ketchup, onions, relish, and tomatoes. The best part is it is always served with another all-time favorite: French fries. You can also devour our fat and juicy hot dog with a wide assortment of beer to choose from.
